Maine Coon cats typically grow to a height of 10 to 16 inches (25 to 41 cm) from the ground to the top of their shoulders. Males are generally taller and more substantial, usually measuring 12 to 16 inches (30 to 41 cm), while females are slightly smaller, averaging 10 to 14 inches (25 to 35 cm). This impressive height easily dwarfs standard domestic cats, which usually reach only 8 to 10 inches at the shoulder. Combined with a long body that can stretch up to 40 inches (101 cm) from nose to tail, their overall frame is truly massive. They reach this towering height slowly, continuing to develop their large skeletal structure and heavy muscle mass until they are three to five years old. Their great height is supported by sturdy, elongated leg bones and large, heavily tufted paws built to bear their significant weight.
