The typical physical characteristics of a Maine Coon include a massive, rectangular body, a shaggy water-resistant coat, tufted ears, and a long, bushy tail. As one of the largest domesticated cat breeds, adult males weigh 15 to 25 pounds (6.8 to 11.3 kg), while females range from 10 to 18 pounds (4.5 to 8.2 kg). They feature a distinctive square muzzle, high cheekbones, and large, expressive eyes. Their heavy coat is uneven, being shorter on the shoulders and longer on the belly and hind legs, often forming a lion-like ruff around the neck. A hallmark of the breed is their large, high-set ears topped with prominent “lynx tips” of fur. Additionally, they possess huge, round paws with heavy tuftings between the toes designed for walking on snow, and a magnificent tail that can stretch the full length of their body to provide warmth.
