Do Maine Coons Shed Less Than Other Cats?

Maine Coons do not shed less than other cats. They typically shed a moderate-to-high amount of long hair strands and fur weekly, which can be more visually prominent than other cat breeds.

Short-haired cat breeds (like British Shorthair or Siamese cats) often shed fur weekly in smaller bursts, while a Maine Coon cats shedding consists of long strands of hair that can cling to furniture, carpets, and build up or tumbleweed on wooden floors.

This makes their loose fur highly noticeable around the home, and potentially more obvious or easy to spot that short-hair cat breeds.

Versus other long-haired cat breeds (like Persians, Siberians, and Norwegian Forest cats), Maine Coons shed a comparable amount. This can increase when they experience “coat blowouts” during seasonal changes in spring and autumn. During these times, they lose their heavy winter or summer coats (just like many other cat breeds) to adapt to changing temperatures.
